Social Tone Processing: Part 1

Disclaimer: While the concepts discussed here are supported by emerging research in neurodiversity and communication science, the "Socially Tone Deaf" framework is based primarily on my personal experience and my specific thought process as a literal thinker.

'Socially Tone Deaf'

In the world of music, being tone deaf means you can’t perceive the difference between pitches. In the world of social interaction, a similar phenomenon exists.

Some literal thinkers, may be "Socially Tone Deaf". This doesn't mean they are rude or "missing" the point on purpose. It means their brains do not naturally process the "emotional pitch" behind a person's voice. They hear the words, they hear the volume, but the "vibe" that tone is supposed to convey simply isn't there.

What It Sounds Like

The best way to explain this to is to imagine that every person you speak to is actually a text message.

When you read a text that says, "That’s just great," you have no idea if the person is truly happy or being sarcastic unless they add an emoji.

"That's just great. 🙄"

"That's just great! 🤩"

For some literal thinkers:

  • Talking in person feels like reading a text.
  • Tone of voice is invisible.
  • The "transcript" of the words is the only thing that is real.

Volume vs Meaning

We can hear if someone is yelling or whispering (volume), but we don't automatically know why they are doing it. A loud voice could mean anger, excitement, or a noisy room. Without a literal explanation, the "why" remains a guess.

Think of a song. You could set the volume at 5 or 50, the song is still the same.

While tone of voice is often a "blind spot," many literal thinkers are actually very good at reading Body Language. Body language is a physical data point. It is a "Visual Emoji."

  • A smile is a data point for "Friendly."
  • Crossed arms and a furrowed brow are data points for "Frustrated."
  • Rolling eyes is a data point for "Sarcastic."

They may interpret the world better when people use their "visuals" because they can't rely on the "audio" of their tone.

Communication Upgrade

If you are talking to a literal thinker, remember that they may be processing your "transcript," not your "vibe."

Don't rely on tone to change the meaning of your words. Use Clear Body Language. Make your physical data match your words.

When we acknowledge that "Social Tone Deafness" is a real processing style, not a choice, we can stop being frustrated by "misinterpreted vibes" and start communicating with clarity.
